University Relations (UR)
Since its establishment in 1995, IBM China Research Lab (CRL) has been keeping good relations with leading universities and research institutes in China and conducting mutual beneficial collaborations for a long run. It dedicates to help advance the academic research and cultivate the top-notch researchers in China.
Collaborative Research
CRL conducts collaborative research with universities and research institutes in China through the below programs.
- Joint Research Lab
We set up joint research lab/institute with universities and research institutes for the long term collaboration in the cutting-edged research areas. In the joint research lab/institute, we together with our partners jointly identify the research areas and sponsor the research with the grants and researchers.
We also set up the short term project with professors on a specific topic. - Open Collaborative Research (OCR)
It is a worldwide program. All results developed under the OCR program will be made available as open source software code or as openly published papers or as royalty-free patents. - Visiting Scholar
Young professors are invited to conduct research with IBM senior researchers for 3-6 months at CRL - Shared University Research (SUR)
It is a worldwide program designed to promote research in areas of mutual value and interest to IBM and universities. Under the program, IBM sponsors the research projects with equipment and grants.
Curriculum Development
CRL delivers series of technical talks and opens courses in universities in various research topics, especially in Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME). SSME aims at formulating insights and know-how through systematic and structured means in service ecosystem. CRL is now collaborating with government agencies and universities for SSME curriculum and degree offering.
- Course Delivery
CRL opens SSME related courses in universities. Currently, we delivered the courses in the graduate schools in over 10 leading universities. We also invite university faculty to join the course offering. - Courseware development and textbook publication
CRL invites university faculty to jointly develop the courseware and work on the textbook publication. - Faculty Training
CRL together with China University Relations team holds the SSME T3 (teach the teacher) program periodically to transfer the courses to faculty. We also hold the seminars to dicuss the SSME curriculum development. - Faculty Award
It is a worldwide program. Under the program, the cash awards are granted to professors engaging courseware and curriculum innovation that are strategic to IBM.

CRL holds the talks and technical workshops on campus every year. Besides CRL researchers, we also invite the experts from IBM worldwide labs to join the face to face communication with faculty and students. - Campus Contest
To encourage Chinese students' interest in the field of information technology, CRL sponsored or hosted the campus contests such as IBM iMMS contest in 2005 and SOA contest in 2006. In 2007, CRL hosted the first Chinese collegiate programming contest. - Conference
CRL sponsors or hosts technical conferences. Currently CRL jointly hosts the international conference of Service Science (ICSS) annually.
